A West Coast deck has to survive a temperate rainforest. The visible decking is the smallest cost — the framing, footings, and waterproof detailing are where the money goes, and where corner-cutting shows up five years later.

Frequently asked
What's the best deck material for Vancouver weather?
There is no universal best — there are tradeoffs. Cedar looks classic and weathers beautifully but needs refinishing every 2–4 years. Composite (Trex, TimberTech) is virtually maintenance-free but has a different look and higher upfront cost. Vinyl decking is fully waterproof — ideal for covered decks and rooftops. We walk you through the tradeoffs during the consult.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Vancouver or North Vancouver?
Permits are almost never required. The only exception is a brand-new attached deck. Refinishing an existing deck or building a freestanding deck does not need a permit. When a permit is needed, Naybur handles the process end-to-end — drawings, submission, inspections, sign-off.
How long does it take to build a deck?
A standard 200–400 sqft deck takes 1–2 weeks of on-site work. Covered sundecks with glass roofs, integrated lighting, and heating run 2–4 weeks. When a permit is required, that adds turnaround time on the front end.
What's the difference between cedar and composite for a West Vancouver deck?
Cedar is real wood — warm grain, classic look, needs annual cleaning and refinishing every few years. Composite is engineered — wood-fibre core with a polymer shell, fade-resistant, no refinishing needed, but visually a step away from real wood. For West Vancouver oceanfront properties with salt air, composite often wins long-term. For traditional architecture, cedar is the right call.
Can you build a covered sundeck so I can use it year-round?
Yes — this is one of our most-requested upgrades for West Coast clients. Glass roof, integrated infrared heaters, weatherproof lighting, sometimes audio and screens. Engineered for snow load and wind. Built so it feels like an outdoor room, not an afterthought.
